The Fear-Tension-Pain Cycle

Birth is such a transformative life event that requires nurturing and tender care. While it’s perfectly normal to feel nervous about birth, let’s talk about the effects of fear and anxiety in the birth space.

When we feel unsafe, fear, anxiety, or stress, our bloodstream fills with adrenaline and we go into fight or flight mode. In “flight mode”, our bodies are pumping blood into extremities to help escape the threat. There may be an increase in heart rate, sweat, and heavy breathing. In “fight mode”, our response creates tension throughout the whole body; clenching the jaw or fists, raised shoulders, muscle tightness. This can create a more intense effect on contractions and build dread and anticipation for the next one. When the next one comes, the pain or perception of pain may be greater causing us to feel trapped in this cycle of fear, tension, and pain.

How we can help end this cycle is education, support, and affirmations.

The more education you have about what to expect- the less room there is for the “what ifs”. Knowledge really is power- once you learn about the way birth was designed and how your body works it’s way through it, you will feel much more confident in it.

Having a great support system that builds you up and understands you, your wishes and fears will help you get out of that cycle. It is their job to keep your mind focused and at ease while helping you get through your laboring journey.

Good vibes only.. While it’s important to feel all of your emotions, you need a way to bring yourself down in a case of heightened stress. This is not a time to dwell on “what ifs” or listen to birth horror stories. Surround yourself with positive affirmations and visualization. Find a place in your mind that let’s you feel calm and open. Put all of your energy into creating this positive image in your mind and go there. Read those birth affirmations you wrote for yourself for this very moment! You can do this!

Happy birthing!
